Coarse explores the ups and downs of life through its deceptively colorful, often light-hearted sculptures. The new Sleepless Nights vinyl art toy set riffs on tossing and turning in a vain attempt for the solace of sleep only to regret one’s delicious, yet perhaps unwise culinary choices. It’s also, of course a reflection of the very real troubles that become obstacles to a peaceful night of sleep.
First seen in resin for 2019’s Possession solo (Rotofugi, Chicago), Sleepless Nights paris Coarse’s signature Noop and Paw characters sandwiched between two buns as tempting hot dogs. While Noop has conquered his tempests (at least for now) and is sleeping comfortably, Paw is wide awake and staring sideways at the slumbering one. Each character is topped with a nicely drizzled portion of a wildly colored condiment. Sauce, please. These surreal snacks are trademark Coarse, food for thought that pushes the thematic range of vinyl art toys.
Sleepless Nights will be available in two editions: Because I Wanted You To Know that offers a slightly restrained, normal-ish color treatment with green pickle slices and the fully imaginative Secret Sauce cloaked in nighttime hues of purple and blue. Like several of Coarse’s recent releases, Sleepless Nights is designed to be mounted on a wall (mounting hardware included) or laid on a flat surface.
