Coarse celebrates two-decades of art toys with the Flake 20th Anniversary Bust. Sculpted in 2003 by Mark Landwehr, this up until now unreleased piece features the chiseled visage of the skate inspired character that started it all. First teased at DesignerCon 2022, this release highlights Coarse’s commitment and contribution to the art of toys.
Sequestered out of sight for nearly twenty years, the OG design comes to life in 2023 in three editions — two in vinyl and and one handmade in wood. The vinyl Flake 20th Anniversary Bust treatments include Coarse’s signature Pain treatment with the classic black/gray design punctuated with a splash of blood below the mouth and Loser in vivid blue and pink.
From production vinyl to elevated, handcrafted wood sculpture, the Walnut edition showcases the beauty of the natural material. The use of multiple wood sections creates a contrasting texture which brings out the depth of the character.
The Flake 20th Anniversary Bust vinyl art toy (18″) will be available in both the Pain (Edition of 199, $396) and Loser editions (Edition of 299, $396) for pre-order on Wednesday (3.1) at 7:59 AM PST from Coarse.
