Kenneth Tang’s Black Seed Toys is back with another double-take, laugh-out-loud take on 60’s era Japanese Tokusatsu TV shows featuring costumed actors taking on the role of monsters and heroes. The new Tokusatsu UltraTan vinyl art toy cleverly plays off the costume aspect with the Ultraman look-a-like taking a break from being not the hero, but an evil Baltan alien.
All is definitely not as it appears in tokusatsu, especially not with Black Seed’s playful, inside-out take on the genre. The fun new figure follows the previous Gojiji figure that saw Godzilla playing the role of a human. UltraTan—the name alone deserves an award—does beg the question of why a hero would dress up as a villain? To enjoy the late-nights, no-limits, no-rules life of a ‘bad boy’, of course.
The Tokusatsu UltraTan vinyl art toy (8.27″) is available for pre-order through September 16th from select retailers including myplasticheart and Strangecat Toys for $134.99. The figure is expected to ship in January 2023.
