Munky King Melrose Opening + OXOP Series 2 Launch

Munky King
celebrated the grand opening of it’s second location on Melrose by hosting the launch party for the OXOP Qee Series 2 this past Thursday night.  Several series artists were in the house including Tim Biskup, Shag, Shepard Fairey, Thomas Han, Frank Kozik, Buff Monster and others.
The turnout was really good with a fairly decent sized crowd in the store and a smaller crowd gathered outside enjoying the breeze and shooting the shit.  In fact, Kozik took up residence against the side of the building and remained there most of the night — his unofficial signing area.

The new store is really nice.  It’s fairly narrow but deep and also widens out into a rear area that would be ideal for smaller art shows.  If you’ve been to the original chinatown location, this one is much larger.  The overall feel is much more modern than the original location.  Instead of traditional chinese style decor, the new location is a sleek showroom for designer toys complete with slick white custom  glass cabinets  with diffused lighting.

So what was in those cabinets?  Well the main thing that caught my eye was the prototype of Luke Chueh’s Possessed figure which is coming soon from Munky King.  Really nice and much more polished than the advanced look shown at last year’s SDCC.  Also, figured I’d take a shot of the Green Kon Artis and the Squires – just ’cause.

The OXOP Qees were displayed in the rear area along with large wall posters of each design. The centerpiece though had to be the 60" White Qee which various artists took to signing throughout the night.  I’ll bet it’s alot more filled now than when I took these pics 😉

All in all a really fun evening. Nice and laid back — was great to catch up with folks.  Btw, Elizabeth Ito has something fun and different in the works 😉

  1. Looks like a good time… and that Possessed is a beautiful improvement over the first prototype shown… of course, even that was killer. 😀

  2. Random: Do you know of a good place to find DIY vinly toys. Ive only seen Munny figures and Heartheads. Also do you have any idea what the best medium is to use on the toys or is it random.

  3. It was a great time- just wish I would’ve taken pics too!!
    Hey Cloudpiercer-
Any toy can be DIY- just lightly sand and primer… And use what you want to customize- markers, acrylics, vinyl stickers, etc…
