Townspeople Frozen in Terror at the Approach of a Family of Angry Snowmonsters
by Elizabeth Berdann

What would happen if you took a diverse set of talented artists and set them in motion to use toys as the raw elements for artistic expression?  The wildly creative answers From the Island of Misfit Toys group show will be on display beginning with the opening at the Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design from 7 to 10 PM on Feburary 10th, 2006.  The guradians of these misfits include: Elizabeth Berdann (Blu), Deborah Brown, Nathan Cabrera, Jonathan Callan, Jeroen de Vries, Dan Goodsell, Kelly Heaton, Walter Martin & Paloma Munoz, Anne Walsh,  and 8 bit Weapon.  From the Island of Misfit toys is curated by Meg Linton and runs through April 15th, 2006.  To coincide with the show there will also be a series of lectures and presentations by participating artists.  Check out the Otis Calendar for more informaton.

Elizabeth Berdann (Blu) was kind enough to send us info and pictures about her  show pieces.  She has a total of 5 pieces including Townspeople Frozen in Terror at the Approach of a Family of Angry Snowmonsters and Frightened Egg.  "Townspeople" is a combo painting and installation piece featuring nine townspeople and four abominable snowmen built from modified "Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys" figures.  Each of the figures featuress a self-portrait of Blu.  Frightened Egg features a 2.5" Egg Qee and two other custom egg buds in glass dome shell.   If Blu’s pieces are any indication at all of the overall level of the show, this is definitely a "must-see" event.
