Thai artist Tos Suntos brings his eye-catching Geecon character to life as a new polystone art toy from Mighty Jaxx. Based on one of the artist’s early images of the character, Geecon is seen in a seated pose, hands clasped together with one feet tucked underneath, creating the illusion of a third hand.
Geecon is a prime example of Tos Suntos’ hallmark practice of reinterpreting Thai culture through the pop culture of his childhood. The character’s mask is a modern, sci-fi inspired take on Hanuman, the legendary warrior-general depicted in Thailand’s Ramakien epic. A closer look at Geecon’s face reveals technology hosted in tradition. Geecon’s eyes are actually lenses or sensors and there’s also another lens in place of a tongue. The character’s metallic head housing and translucent horns hint at the robotic mechanism within. In addition to the sci-fi influences, the characters’ gloved hands would seem to be nod to vintage cartoons.
The new figure is an enticing invitation to explore Tos Suntos’ work which is filled with imaginative character designs blending Thai and pop culture. An affordable starting point for collectors, the piece follows the previously released fiberglass sculpture from Boo X Project featuring a breakdancing design that reveals the character’s lineage derived from Hanuman’s identity as a monkey warrior.
The Geecon polystone art toy (8.5″) will be available for pre-order on Saturday (2.4) at 6 AM PST from Mighty Jaxx for $199 and is slated to ship in July 2023.
