Josh Divine and Bradley Frank are launching the new Heavy Cream art toy brand in order to make standout toys with artists from varied mediums. Known for his Crash art toy series (Astro Crash, Super Crash) and more recently his Biting Vase lifestyle project, Josh Divine brings his experience—formerly as part of Kidrobot—translating others’ art into toys as a designer, illustrator and sculptor. An avid toy collector, Bradley Frank is an industry veteran with experience in making and promoting toys, most recently for MunkyKing. Both founders bring their talents to this new adventure of making toys they’ve always wanted to see from some of their favorite artists.
Heavy Cream has several exciting art toy projects underway from a talented lineup including Luke Chueh, Josh Divine, Mike Egan, Kevin Scalzo, Yuko Shimizu, Jasper Wong and more. As an introduction to the brand’s artistic mix, Vinyl Pulse will be previewing several upcoming Heavy Cream releases in the next few days.
We begin with The Nugget vinyl art toy (4″), Josh Divine’s striking new design featuring a menacing chicken + tank hybrid. Divine’s concept was inspired, in part, by Warner Herzog’s quote about chickens which begins with: “Look into the eyes of a chicken and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity…” A provocative, eye-catching commentary, Divine sees The Nugget as a symbol of “dangerous ignorance”. Heavy Cream is aiming to release The Nugget towards the end of this year.
With a promising initial wave of releases, Heavy Cream’s launch is welcome news for collectors looking for distinct art toys, many from artists who have yet to explore the possibilities of the medium.
