The Art of Toys: A Left Coast Retrospective of Designer Toys at the Museum of Art & History in Lancaster, California begins with a special ticked VIP Night ($45) on Friday (7.17). As the title suggests, the museum exhibition presents a history of designer toys by focusing on artists on the West Coast —one of the primary hubs of the movement—who saw vinyl toys as an exciting new canvas for their transformative brand of lowbrow/pop surrealist art, centered in Los Angeles.
Co-curated by Julie B. of Pretty in Plastic and Heidi Johnson of Hijinx Artists Management, the Art of Toys features works from more than 100 artists, makers, toy shops and galleries including Gary Baseman, Luke Chueh, Tristan Eaton, Ron English, Frank Kozik, Joe Ledbetter, Buff Monster, Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Mark Ryden, Greg (CRAOLA) Simkins, Toy Art Gallery, DKE Toys, Giant Robot, Meltdown, Munky King, Necessaries Toy Foundation, Pretty In Plastic, Silent Stage Gallery, Super7, 3DRetro, Circus Posterus / Stranger Factory.
In addition to the curated selection of designer toys, the exhibition will feature murals by David P. Flores, Hueman (Allison Torneros) and Angry Woebots as well as installation by Kozyndan.
