Preview: Doktor A’s ‘A Postcard from New Yorkshire’ (10.12)

Last night I had the chance to duck into myplasticheart’s store on the lower east side to get a brief glimpse of Doktor A and the mph crew setting up ‘A Postcard from New Yorkshire’ which opens on Friday (10.12). From what I saw, the space is being transformed nicely to showcase Dok’s wondrous new works. While the setup was too early to do justice to it with photos, here’s a look at  just a few of the pieces that caught my eye.

In short, Dok has outdone himself with  several  awe inspiring over-sized pieces, many of which he’s showcased on his blog.   While slightly less imposing scale wise, his medium-sized pieces including the vaudevillian Siamese act of Maxwell and Hugo and the fearsome trio that is the Finial Brothers ooze with the steam punk detail we expect and crave.  In addition to his character-based pieces, he’s also created a few artifact style pieces, things you might find in a discriminating household within his universe.  The wall-mounted Anthony E. Lope, the latest commissioned head for the eclectic Anthony, is a striking piece of steam-powered taxidermy.

Be sure to drop by this Friday (10.12) from 7 to 10 to see all the wonders that lie behind the curtain and to chat with Dok himself.
