Studio Visit: kaNO for ‘Rare Breed’

I had a chance to drop by kaNO’s new studio in Burbank last night to check out the spot and his work for the three-person ‘Rare Breed’ show opening on Friday, January 7th 2011 @ myplasticheartnyc.  kaNO  has been hard at work on a series of eight acrylic paintings on panels in the large space which he shares with three other animation professionals who use it to focus on their personal passions.

kaNO’s work area is  ready for  business with a large wooden easel, sturdy work tables, and an array of spray paint including both Montana brands plus the ever trusty Krylon.  It’s not all work though.  There are  a few toys tacked on the wall and spread out on the work surface including his favorite new toy – James Jarvis’ Caleb, a mini Tmutt by Mike Burnett, the silver ‘n black Mr. Spray, an open Bodega used as a pen holder, and the latest thirst quencher from Trustocorp.   On the far wall lies a shelving unit storing quite a few toy blanks…

For ‘Rare Breed’, kaNO has created a cohesive set of paintings featuring his urban characters rendered with his signature clean line-work.  Looking to push his aesthetic forward, he’s stepped away from the safety of his normal red, black, grey and white palette.  Mixing cool foreground tones with warm backgrounds, each piece flows nicely into the next without being repetitive.   The visual synergy between the paintings combined with the rather reasonable pricing beckon collectors to pick up multiple pieces for an impressive display.

If you’re in NYC, definitely stop by myplasticheartnyc to check out the show which also features the work of Angry Woebots and Scribe.  kaNO and Woebots will be at the opening to chop it up with fans and collectors.
