Monster Molly’s Story

Full of peculiar yet brilliant ideas, our young artist, Monster Molly, breathes life to unique characters from the strokes of her enchanted paint brush. Each of her invigorated little creations in turn reward her with their devoted friendship as a gesture of their gratitude.

On a warm, late August afternoon, Molly ventures deep into the forest on a quest for inspiration. The young Molly settles down amidst the inviting shade of a magnificent tree and takes out her brushes to paint. Her painting session is interrupted by a yawn escaping from Molly’s mouth. As the warm breezy comfort of sleep overtakes her, Molly spies through blinking eyelids, an intriguing creature of queer origin, not quite frog yet not a lizard. Before she can determine its true form, Molly is swept gently away to sleep, sweet and sound.

In the cozy haze of sleep, Molly launches into a conversation with this little monster.

“Are you curious as to my leisurely pursuits?” she inquires. “Unlike many other girls, I prefer collecting robots and cars that are spacey and speedy over ribbons and dolls that are lacy and needy. For some reason, I get jolts of happiness in my heart whenever I see toys that move, so I collect them. I also like watching cartoons about fantastical worlds in the future. ”

“My preschool is perched at the lip of a ravine, and I often gaze through the windows during classes to see the great wide world out there. On sunny days, I savor the panoramas that tease me from just outside the classroom window; on rainy days, I find shelter under the enormous leaves of a forest plant and listen to the raindrops plop into squishy mud puddles. I also love writing poetry: “Little froggy, ariseth from the pond. Quest onward for a new home. Ribbit. Ribbit. Ribbit…”

The young Molly quickly tires from spouting forth so much commentary. “Oh, it seems that I’m nearly faint from yammering about and have yet to give you my name. Allow me to introduce myself again: Hello, everyone, I am Monster Mo….”

–suddenly a baseball-sized dew drop trickles off a leaf tip right onto Molly’s face. She wipes away the dew, and through her flicking fingertips discovers the little monster has vanished into a glistening speck of forest light. Instinctively Monster Molly picks up her paintbrush to illustrate the little monster from the forest, or was it a resident from her dreams? She scampers off along the swirling forest path in search of the wandering little monster.
