Seen: The Pushers Show

Featuring 50+ artist customs of Thomas Han’s original vinyl, The Pushers Show opened this past Thursday @ Munky King on Melrose.   The show offers a lot of variety with several excellent pieces. While most of the pieces left the basic Pusher shape as-is, a few artists flexed their sculpting skills with strong results including J. Shea, Zoso, Dave Pressler and Marty M. Ito who went off with a wild original resin sculpt for his Rabbit That’s Kidding.   Off the top of the dome (no angry emails please 😉 , other standout pieces to my eye included  Miss Mindy ‘The Worker’ complete with harvesting sack, Mari Inukai’s cute and smooth “Akuma Tenshi”, Buff Monster’s hybrid of a pusher and his own signature character,  Scott Belcastro’s awesome deer-pusher, Angry Woebots’s over-the-top yet well-done Bullet Spitter, Yoskay Yamamoto’s super sublime Namida with a filled in face and gorgeous paint job,  and Foox’s intricately painted Air Badger. Finally, Luke Chueh turned in what was likely one of the most talked about pieces – Powder featured a Pusher covered in well… chunky white powder displayed on a mirrored surface complete with three lines and some cash.

Just a few words on the show setup. The pieces were displayed quite nicely along three walls of MK’s gallery space – each was on it’s on mini-shelf rather than in confining display units.  The presentation choice was spot on – things felt roomy and it was possible to see most pieces from several angles.

While I unfortunately had to jump in, shoot and run, it was good to see Thomas Han at the show.  He’s mad talented and we’re looking forward to whatever he does next.   If you couldn’t make the opening, definitely head over to MK and check it out – a worthwhile viewing especially considering most of the pieces are quite affordable (under say $350).
