Seen: Amanda Visell’s Tic Toc Apocalypse

 DSC_6192_800

Amanda Visell opened her most ambitious solo yet, Tic Toc Apocalypse @ M Modern yesterday (6.21).  As we blogged yesterday, Amanda and about 35 friends, artists, and industry folks went down to the show aboard a party bus.  While I won’t ramble on listing off all the people on the bus, there were many familiar faces including Buff Monster, Joe Ledbetter, Kii Arens, Luke Chueh, Patrick Lam(Munky King), Dov Kelemer (DKE), Jon Gibson (I am 8-Bit), Julie B.,  Michelle Valigura and more.  The bus was provided by Boost Mobile since Amanda is a Boosted Artist.   Lunch/Dinner was provided by Tiara Cafe and was served fittingly in Amanda’s lunch boxes from Dark Horse.

After we arrived in Palm Springs on what was a fairly quick trip down, we were greeted by the oven like atmosphere of the desert complete with hot blowing winds.  Not just an oven, but a convection one – all the better to be cooked in.

We entered the gallery quickly to get a close-up look at Amanda’s work including numerous paintings (including several large pieces on canvas). five sweet wood sculptures, several drawings, and two customized carnival ride metal horses.

Amanda’s latest work highlights increased complexity, size and technique improvements. The scope of her paintings has evolved through greater use of background elements for  greater depth.  Amanda’s personal favorite painting, Griffin Lava Breath, showcases her increased use of lighting effects with excellent results. Tic Toc Apocalypse is a strong step forward  which continues her path of growing popularity and prominence.  Moving towards larger pieces is a risky yet crucial step in an artist’s career and we’re happy to say collectors were receptive to her bigger,  more encompassing pieces.

Many pieces sold before the opening while a few larger pieces sold during it including the two-headed ice giant sculpture.  A few large pieces remain – see M Modern’s preview page.

In addition to her show work, Amanda used the opening as an opportunity to show off prototypes of her new artist lamps in the works from Fully Visual – the folks who have been creating the sweet limited edition metal figures.  Pics in the gallery.

After an even quicker bus ride back to Silverlake, all of the VIP’s were given a gift bag – filled with the latest Swindle issue featuring a story on Amanda, Amanda’s stationery from Dark Horse,   a Poopicorn Brigade print (1/100), a  mini replica of the show logo bomb (hand-painted clock face), as well as a Boosted Backpack and cell phone case – see the last pic in the gallery.  After the jump – a gallery full of pics from the opening and the bus ride.
