First show in unpainted proto form at SDCC, the upcoming 7" Maneki Neko (Lucky Cat) vinyl sculpted by Zakka offers his interpretation of the iconic and pervasive Japanese statues. Zakka’s Maneki Neko carries a more powerful presence in part from the larger body and the addition of getas (sandals). Building on Zakka’s sculpt, Superstar Simone Legno’s (tokidoki) sweet art completes the Maneki Neko figure. We’re happy to bring you the first look at Simone’s flat art for his Maneki Neko design. While the design features Simone’s signature characters and style, it’s probably his darkest so far with the razor blade character and especially the skull-head ‘safety’ pins.
Limited to 500 pieces, Maneki Neko is scheduled to drop from Zakkamono in early 2008. Each figure will ship with an additional ‘secret toy’ included in the box. Zakkamono will also release a blank DIY edition. For sales and general inquiries please email Zakkamono.
Zakka’s Artist Statement
Why another vinyl urban designer toy? Because it was waiting to be done. After many years of being an voracious collector of comics and toys(Japanese vintage in particular), I wanted to try my hand at infusing my tastes along with my graphic design and photographic background. What better way to jump into the DIY world and toy community. My collecting of toys has grown from American action figures to vintage Japanese vinyl Kaiju and super heroes to urban vinyl toys. This to me is the ultimate transition and logical direction. Creating a platform toy gives me the opportunity to meet and work with talented artists in the contemporary toy/art movement of the day. The Icon that I chose to enhance and develop was the Maneki Neko/Lucky Cat which is widely recognizable by most people who see them at restaurants, mom and pop stores, and business offices. The goal of this toy is to gather artists from around the world to further its recognition and hopefully continue welcoming people and passing on good fortune. Stay tuned for more figures
