MINDstyle’s Benny and Red Bird by Kathie Olivas

For today’s Proto Monday we’re excited to bring you the first look at MINDstyle’s Benny and Red Bird set from Kathie Olivas.  Kathie’s Misery Children paintings put a spin on childhood innocence — while dressed in cute animal suits, their ambiguous expressions and often covered mouths suggest that all is not as it seems.    With Benny and Red Bird, Kathie’s art comes to life in vinyl. Sharp-eyed observers will recognize these  figures from the original "Red Bird" painting from Kathie’s show at Copro Nason last year. The detail is meticulous, from the ruffled collar on Red Bird to the large lollipop, and delicate ears of Benny.

This set elevates the standard of art toys which is  necessary for vinyl to reach a new level of legitimacy within the art world.    MINDstyle’s visionary founder, Matt D. Young explains "Kathie’s work
translates extremely well into art toys and is an incredible artist."

Benny  (8")  and Red Bird (6")  will drop at SDCC ’07 from MINDstyle.

  1. I agree, really great transition from 2-D to 3-D. It’s always nice to see such great looking vinyl that’s NOT influenced by graffiti (no offense to that which is).

  2. Sweet Kathie, looks great, can’t wait to see the real paints. So glad you’re finally getting stuff out for real! Time to make room on my shelves.

Agreed Milk. It seems that Wheaty Wheat can’t keep any of their artists or get any new toys released… too bad for them, they’re only shooting themselves in the foot.
