Brent Nolasco @ Seams (04.08.2006)
Brent Nolasco’s solo show, Mutation, opened this past Saturday (04.08.06) at Seams in Long Beach, CA.
Thanks to Albert of Rooted Movement we have some choice pics of Brent and the show pieces which included 2d original art and several nice customs. While I’m not too familiar with Brent’s work, I love what I see. While there is a certain Soto-ish quality to his work, the originality with the "plug" creatures and slightly anachronistic vibe shines through as well. His art also seems to translate to toy customs as well, with the blue Munny and Skumbo as my favorites.
Soto-ish? I’d say. Same exact poses and compositions, structures, color schemes, elements like the robots, spores, random sized wood pieces.
Maybe this guy started painting before Jeff, I don’t know him, but it really looks like someone owes someone else an apology!
The paint makes the elephant. If that is how they came in production I bet scumbo would have sold a hell of a lot more.
I think I can see some of sotos look in there slightly.
As for the cut wood, people have been doing that for ages. Soto is just a popular person who happens to do it as well.
I love the use of the shaped wood for a medium, but I have been reluctant to do it for the sake that I would look like I am copying Soto since it seems to be his signiture and he is currently in the lime light.
Ya know. After looking at more of his work for a bit, I might have to agree a bit more with the first post.
Wow! To me it looks like a total rip of Jeff Soto’s work.
Not a very good one at that. Colors, Shapes, Figures etc.
Indeed, im sensing a total rip-off. BOO.
Come now, it may be chip off the Soto-block, but it’s still a damn good one. His canvas work is crisp and the mixed media canvases are well arranged. His customs are where he shines, and in some ways outshines Soto. Whereas Soto likes to simply use customs as 3d canvases for his 2d work, Nolasco seems to let his work be informed by the shape and style of the piece.
All in all, me likes.
I don’t think Soto’s fingers tweak out like that when the camera’s shutter opens though. They’re different in THAT way at least!
i think brent is cool, is artwork is amazing. i dunno how you can compare him to soto, if you see each of their stuff in person, you’d know better.
props to brent! 🙂
