German artists Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk , collectively known as Coarse, will open Because I wanted You To Know solo at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 7th, 2023. The new exhibition allows the viewer the privilege of peering into the final stages of an exuberant, wild dinner party with the participants blissfully unaware of being seen.

The collection of sculptures overflow with sweet desserts, flowing cream and jiggly jello. As with much of Coarse’s art, the eye-catching pieces ofter layers of meaning and reflection. As Landwehr comments, the work is in part a recognition of the profoundly ephemeral nature of life: “In getting older, I’ve thought a lot about the fragility of life and how we think beautiful experiences will repeat themselves in the future, but more often than not they don’t. For this series I wanted to explore the disconnect between being in a perfect moment but simultaneously feeling as if it is already over. Because this is such a personal exhibition, most of the sculptures feature our most well-known character, noop, who is my self-portrait. The name noop is shortened form of ‘non-operational’ and hints at how we are all powerless to the way life carries us forward, oftentimes against our will.”

While Coarse’s art toys have always prioritized the former over the latter, this show frees themselves from product constraints including material, complexity, size and perhaps to a lesser degree, theme.
