Tearing Cocoons by Codec Zombie

Italian artist Codec Zombie’s showcase releases come few and far between. The creativity and time that goes into each original art toy makes each drop feel like an event rather than a routine release. His upcoming Tearing Cocoons resin is beautiful, dramatic and enigmatic all at once.

The sculpture features a mostly naked character with a dark organic form still wrapped around the torso as it slips off the body and trails behind. Given the title, the piece seems to reflect a birth or transformation. Tearing Cocoons follows the artist’s Drowning Thoughts to which it shares a focus on organic reflections of the human dilemma. Much of Codec Zombie’s work flows out of a deep concern for the environment. While the environmental symbolism of Drowning Thoughts lies near the surface, a possible connection is more nuanced here.

Interpretation is up to the observer. Rather than chaotic, the transformation is graceful. Without the title, the piece has a fashionable appeal with the ‘cocoon’ as perhaps an organic, mystical garment.

A signed/numbered edition of 35, Tearing Cocoons is slated for a ToyCon UK debut (4 pieces) next weekend and will subsequently be offered online sometime in May. As is his practice, Codec Zombie has created a custom cardboard box for the figure, complete with an artful cutout and half-tone style printing.
