James Jean explores the depths of the unconscious with the new Animus bronze sculpture in collaboration with AllRightsReserved. The seated monkey has a mirrored face and ears which match the finish on the small box it holds.
As with the psyche, there are multiple levels to Jean’s latest creation. On a functional level, the piece can be used as a stash box accessed by removing the magnetic lid. On a deeper level, the emptiness of the box hints at the difficulty one has in seeing and grasping the unconscious. the monkey’s mask can also be removed to reveal an abstract arrangement of flower petals. The pattern offers an opportunity for reflection of what truly lies within. Fittingly, the mask can be placed inside the box.
An edition of 40, the Animus bronze sculpture (7.87H x 4.72W x 5.12″D) is available for preorder from the DDT Store for HK$39,250 (~$5000) and is slated to ship in May 2023. The sculpture comes in a handsome wooden box and includes a signed/numbered certificate of authenticity.
