Yeye CNY Edition by Munky King

Munky King has just released its new Yeye CNY edition vinyl art toy. This special edition features Yeye (grandfather) dressed up for Chinese New Year in a red coat and gold shirt — traditional celebratory colors for the New Year’. Inspired by Munky King founder Patrick Lam’s own Yeye, the piece is a reminder about the scourge of hate directed towards Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), especially those of older generations unable to defend themselves.

Designed by Danil Yad, the piece captures the twisted reality of irrational hate. From front to back the mood switches from heartwarming to tragic. From the front, we see a friendly Chinese grandfather enjoying a stroll with the help of a cane. From the back, we see how some see this innocent individual, as a target. The jarring absurdity of the juxtaposition speaks to the senseless nature of race-based hate and the urgent need to stop its rise. Yeye is the second release in MK’s Truth to Power series and follows The Messenger, a tribute to Colin Kaepernick’s selfless, historic protest of taking a knee for oppressed African Americans.

The Yeye CNY edition vinyl art toy (6.5″) is available from Munky King for $88. Munky King will donate a portion of the proceeds from the figure to support #stopasianhate and other AAPI initiatives.
