Yeye by Munky King x YARMS

Stunned and saddened by the recent rise in hate and violence directed at Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Munky King founder Patrick Lam has collaborated with Danil Yad’s YARMS studio on the just-released YeYe vinyl art toy. The figure features Lam’s humble paternal grandfather (Yeye in Mandarin).

The piece features a loving grandfather as most of us see him, hobbled by time, a kind and gentle soul. From the back though, we confront how some see him, as a target of their irrational rage. The piece is jarring as it embodies the disturbing disconnect of racial hatred that strips innocent victims of their humanity.

The Yeye vinyl art toy (6.5″) is available from Munky King for $88. The figure is the second release from the brand’s Truth to Power line which also includes the The Messenger (2018), a tribute to Colin Kaepernick’s courageous taking-a-knee for social justice.
