The Apse Project by Tim Biskup

Fueled by the unprecedented experience of creating during the pandemic, Tim Biskup’s The Apse Project represents a newfound, experimental, hands-on way of working.

Each of the ten mixed-media sculptures is a result of endless hours spent ‘playing’ with Lego blocks, until the result eventually ‘clicks’ into place—an abstract representation of a person’s essence. Each emergent form is then placed within a translucent, soft vinyl head and given a Lego base. Completing the concept, each comes in a functional ‘APSE’ box built from Legos, of course.

From this ingenious mix of everyday building blocks and Biskup’s repurposed vinyl figures comes conceptually and visually striking pieces. While sharing common elements, the unique ‘soul’ of each is created, brick by brick, by the artist’s hand. The The Apse Project sculptures blend two different toy worlds into a compelling new whole.

In architecture, an apse is the central focal point of a building. In a church it is typically the site of the altar and a representation of God. The unique Lego + soft vinyl art toy head sculptures represent human life–extending the architecture concept to our own anatomy. In addition to the sculptures, Biskup also created several paintings inspired by his new organic process.

The Apse Project solo show opens on Friday (7.8) from 6 to 9 PM at Tim Biskup’s Face Guts in Glassell Park and runs through July 24th.
