Just a few months removed from his triple solo exhibitions at Nanzuka’s three gallery spaces in Japan, Indonesian surrealist painter Roby Dwi Antono is set to release his limited-edition Mystique Moonlight Lamp in collaboration with AllRightsReserved. The striking piece features one of the painter’s intriguing hybrid character, part human, part apparent primordial reptile with an elongated tail.
The piece confronts mortality with the character holding a small skull in its hand that serves as a small lamp. Two individual skulls, one larger than the other, round out the artistic expression. Mystique Moonlight may reflect the artist’s stated interest in the passage of existence from one being to another as a personal evolution over multiple lifetimes. Interestingly, the character’s eyes are nearly shut, obscuring the expressive glass eyes featured in many of the artist’s sculptures. Some beings are easier to read than others. While certainly different, the Mystique Moonlight Lamp shares artistic DNA with Dwi Antono’s previously-released Asteria sculpture.
An edition of 250, the Mystique Moonlight Lamp (11.81″, mixed media) is available for HK$21,980 ($2808) via online raffle from the DDT Store through Sunday (4.10) at 9 PM PDT. The pieces comes in a wood box complete with a signed/numbered certificate of authenticity.
