Coolabo has collaborated with Tencent’s QQ messenger app and its PuPu penguin mascot on the upcoming astroRabbitt figure. As hinted by the name, the figure blends Coolabo’s Astrocat and Rabbitt figures with a new anime-like girl character. Well more than a sum of her parts, astroRabbitt—designed by 205—feels fresh yet familiar. Executed seamlessly, the combination of the two cosmic characters is bound to excite Coolrain / Coolabo collectors as a best of both worlds concept.
The clever design extends to the QQ x PuPu collaborative aspect of the figure as well with both obvious and subtle crossover elements. On the obvious side, astroRabbitt’s space pack features a circular port that accommodates a PuPu penguin ball figure plus several smiley emojis. The unused balls, capsule toys fit into the Rimowa style suitcase which ties back to 3D modeler Yama’s Buddeng figure. From obvious to subtle, the character’s clear helmet visor has a penguin-style face sculpt.
While astroRabbitt is an exciting new Coolabo design, the news might be bitter sweet. With the QQ crossover, it’s certainly possible that the figure (or at least this edition) might be limited to a China only release.
