‘Puppy’ by Victor Castillo x 3DRetro

First shown as a painted proto at last year’s DesignerCon, Chilean artist Victor Castillo’s Puppy vinyl art toy will make its debut from 3DRetro in a little over a week’s time. The double-take two-figure set is inspired by Castillo’s striking Puppy Toy painting featuring a girl riding a person in a wolf suit.

The Puppy art toy conveys the wonder and curiosity of the surreal scene depicted in the painting, the girl balancing perfectly on top of the ‘wolf’. Castillo’s signature aesthetic including the missing eyes and sausage noses is on display here, a comment on people’s inability to see the truth that surrounds them and on their duplicitous nature.

While designed as a set, the two figures are separate rather than attached which allows for some flexibility in display and maybe more importantly maintains the relationship between the two characters. The art toy is not a direct replica of the painting, the most notable difference being that the toy features a crown instead of the wild, horned football helmet from the painting.

An edition of 250, the Puppy vinyl art toy (10.25″) will be available on Friday, August 20, 2020 from 3DRetro for $195 via their livestream release on Popshop Live (iOS)—use ‘ARTTOY’ code to join.

Update (8.19): Release date updated.
