Taiwanese artist Jei Tseng (J.T Studio) stylized interpretation of the Journey to the West Chinese epic story began with his 1/6 scale series—his primary medium—and continued with subsequent vinyl art toy versions. Now, J.T Studio takes their first steps into the frenzied world of blindbox minis with the upcoming Baby to the West series produced by CJoy.
As the series name suggests, Baby to the West offers a new take with each of the characters, from Tang Monk to the Monkey King, re-imagined as toddlers. The streamlined designs with wide, blank eyes offer a simpler, pared-down take on the epic story’s characters while also adding a fifth bull (ox) king character to the mix, not seen in the previous larger-format series. While the figures are smaller and have rounder shapes, they still retain the artist’s edgy style without succumbing to the current trend of cute, cuter, and cutest when it comes to minis.
The Baby to the West mini vinyl art toys (4″) are available for pre-order from select retailers including myplasticheart ($12.99) and Strangecat Toys ($14). A full case of five figures features the complete set. The new series is slated to ship sometime in August 2020.
