As part of it’s continuing Meet Project series showcasing the work of influential artists, often in new mediums, AllRightsReserved will present the new Genesis (元氣) Bronze Incense Chamber by Chinese artist Yue Minjun. Standing nearly 16″ tall, Genesis features the artist’s stylized self-portrait, hands clasped in front at the waist, realized in black bronze. His signature laughing expression immediately becomes the focal point of the piece in use, smoke billowing forth from the mouth.
As reported by Hypebeast, Genesis continues the artist’s exploration of laughter with Minjun commenting, “The Coronavirus led me to reflect on how all life is sustained by Qi. As the vital force behind any living entity, humankind and nature are all infused with this energy. I hope people will start to understand Qi as the spirit that both brings us to life and keeps us alive. With this work I want to reconnect with Oriental culture. Qi infuses the sculpture with mystery.”
A numbered edition of 50, The Genesis (元氣) Bronze Incense Chamber will be available on Thursday (6.4) at 7 PM PDT from the Ding Dong Takuhaibin Store for $13,000 each. Packaged in a wooden box, the incense chamber will include a signed authentication card. Shipping is slated for August 2020. A DDT Store account is required to purchase the piece. Genesis follows the artist’s previous collaboration with AllRightsReserved, Surplus Value, which featured a wood bust sculpture capped with a metal plate.
