Fatboy by Björn Humbe

Spotted unexpectedly while floating around hashtags, we had the good fortune of stumbling upon the Fatboy resin art toy by Björn Humbe. The BMX-inspired figure is a standout, throw back piece with style to spare. While he worked on an early art toy concept back in the day, Humbe is a veteran character animator with a considerable video game background including numerous Battlefield series credits.

The 13″ Fatboy showcases Humbe’s character design skills and passion for the extreme sport scene. The original design features a laid-back, skinny teen chillin’ on his sweet low ride with purple fork and handlebars. Looking at the character and its exaggerated proportions, one can see the influence of his personal inspirations including animated films such as Triplets of Belleville, Iron Giant and the Incredibles as well as the art toys of Michael Lau, Jason Freeny, Jong-Hun Ha, and the Gorillaz.

Designed, sculpted, and cast by the artist, Fatboy is an impressive piece that immediately triggers the ‘want’ reflex.  The mix of fun, stylized character + realistic mechanical design is an irresistible combination. Beyond the strong concept + design, the impressive paint and finish puts this one well over the top. Perhaps modestly, Humbe describes Fatboy as his ‘first serious attempt to start doing art toys and build up something fun’.

At this point, Fatboy is a one-off piece. Don’t despair just quite yet. Humbe is considering making a small-run edition if enough collectors reach out and demand it. Be sure to follow this exciting artist on Instagram. We’re looking forward to what’s next.
