iBoy by Classicbot

After an extended development period (well worth it), Classicbot (Philip Lee) is offering their latest retro Apple art toy: iBoy.  Known for their Classicbot (OG Mac) and iBot G3 (iMac) figures, Classicbot is reaching out beyond Macs to the classic, beloved click-wheel iPod with the new iBoy.

Available via a Kickstarter campaign, the well-designed and executed iBoy celebrates Apple’s first mp3 player with a playful design that is surprisingly true to the appearance of the original device while also being a creative toy in its own right.  Through the use of clever magnetic parts including the inspired earpod style ‘ears’, curved arms, stubby legs and the included plug-in dummy headphones, the iBoy easily converts from the ‘bot mode to the mp3 player lookalike mode.

While iBoy is an art toy through and through with zero electronic functionality, designer Philip Lee has gone to extreme lengths to duplicate the look and feel of the classic music player from the satisfying clickable buttons and rotatable control wheel to the chrome finish on the rear and the selection of ports across the top. Extra heft was incorporated into the ABS design to ensure just the right weighty feel to satisfy the nostalgic itch.

The iBoy Kickstarter features several reward levels including a single iBoy at a discounted price ($37) versus the suggested $42 pricing as well as 2-pack and 3-packs at the same per unit pricing.  And… now that the stretch goal has been met, backers can choose either the classic white iBoy or the space gray and red Special Edition. At this pricing, iBoy is an easy ‘yes’ for fans of the classic iPod.
