Mark Dean Veca for ‘Graphic Subversion’ at CSUN Art Galleries

The CSUN Art Galleries will present Graphic Subversion, featuring the work of Mark Dean Veca and Mark Steven Greenfield, from February 1st through March 14th, 2020. Curated by CSUN Professor Emeritus Betty Ann Brown, the exhibit explores how both artists subvert and critically repurpose imagery, symbols and artistic conventions. Greenfield’s work often address racial issues while Veca’s paintings upend the tradition of filigree by transitioning it from aristocratic flourish to his signature, visceral aesthetic featuring organic, gut-like shapes.

Veca is also well known for his portrayals of iconic characters drawn from popular culture, recasting them in his own context. Shown as part of this exhibit, his large Ain’t Afraid painting (59.5 x 59.5″) featuring the Ghostbusters logo is an excellent example of his work and aesthetic.
