DKE Toys – Space Rat Action Figure Art Series at SDCC

So DKE Toys found itself in the enviable but puzzling situation of sitting on a pile of vintage Salacious Crumb Star Wars figures produced by Kenner a long, long time ago (ok, 1983).  What to do?  When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. With piles of Salcious Crumb figures, DKE created Space Rats, well actually the Space Rat Action Figure Art Series.

DKE invited eleven artists to interpret Jabba the Hutt’s Court Jester with original artwork. Dropping at SDCC 2018 from the DKE booth [#5045], the Space Rat  series combines the vintage figures with one of eleven different artist backing boards featuring the artwork created for the project.  The impressive lineup includes Scott C., Christian Clayton, Rob Clayton, Robbie Conal, Mike Egan, Alex Gross, Peter Kuper, Carlos Ramirez, Martha Rich, Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson

Each artist edition is limited to 100 signed/numbered pieces (back of card), with the first 20 of each reserved for matching numbered sets. The Space Rat figures will be available at the DKE booth for $25 each or $200 for a set (a $275 value).  This project turns the artist action figure concept on its ear ever so slightly  with the focus being the artwork on the header card rather than the vintage toy itself, which is identical across all the artist editions.

Pete Fowler x Super Plastic – Alternate ‘Bran’ Janky Colorway

Superplastic’s meteoric Janky Kickstarter ended last Friday with a whopping $547K!  If you missed out, fret not, as Superplastic has soft-launched their online store with two initial offerings – S1 Blindboxes *($10) and the Oh-No! 8” Superjanky by Mc Bess ($80).  The Series 1 product page shows a nice grid of designs including one we’ve haven’t seen before – an alternate colorway of the ‘Bran’ Janky from Pete Fowler.  This one is slightly more subdued than the wild blue+pink of the OG design. One other tidbit, both the S1 surprise boxes and the Superjanky are slated to ship in time for Christmas 2018 – which is slightly ahead of the previously mentioned January 2019 timeframe. There’s more to come with Superplastic officially launching their on-line store on Tuesday July 10th at 9 AM PDT.

Munky King x kaNO – The Messenger Ice Edition

Munky King has just released The Messenger Ice Edition resin figure (edition of 25, 6.5”)  on their web shop for $200.  This newest edition of the Colin Kapernick-inspired figure designed by kaNO is a low-run, premium resin edition featuring a beautiful clear frosted finish. The Ice Edition continues efforts to raise awareness and address the scourge of police brutality towards people of color, an injustice which inspired the ex-NFL Quarterback’s poignant protest of taking a knee during the national anthem prior to games.  I had a chance to see this edition up close on the episode of Toy Geeks Behind the Counter featuring MK-founder Patrick Lam and am happy to say photos hardly do it justice.  In person, it’s amazing.

Matt Gondek x Avenue de Arts x 3DRetro -- ‘Aggression’ Art Toy Aims for Fall 2018

Whoa.  Matt Gondek’s upcoming Aggression vinyl art toy will bring the wicked vision of his original painting (2018) of the same into glorious 3D.  In development with Avenue de Arts and 3DRetro who is handling production, the figure features a gnarly sculpt with a grizzled, drippy, ‘deconstructed’ Martian ready to slay with his battered blaster. This shot of the proto has us setup for an agonizing wait for the anticipated Fall ‘18 drop. If you can’t wait, you could scour the secondary market for his limited-edition tees featuring the Aggression image in red+gray which were available exclusively at his recent Clean Break pop-up in NYC.

Amy Sol x Munky King Art Toy Dreams

Amy Sol recently posted a snap from her meeting with Munky King featuring a few toys as well as her lovely WIP sculpture.  Munky King also reposted the image.  Could we see an Amy Sol vinyl art toy from Munky King? The outlook looks quite bright :)

While she’s known primarily as a painter, Amy has been creating sculptures alongside her paintings for a few years now. As with her paintings, many of her sculptures feature animal people such as the piece above. For reference, see photos of the completed piece as well as some of her previous sculptural work below. We’re looking forward to seeing what form transpires from the new collaboration.
