Reina Koyano x 3DRetro – Air Mag Girl Release Party (3.3)

3DRetro is stocking the shelves, lining up the food trucks, a nd tidying up the counter for the release of Reina Koyano’s Air Mag Girl  on Saturday (3.3, 6 PM) at their Glendale location. Inspired by the crazy Back To The Future kicks, the vinyl bust (7”, $100) brings all the detail and style of Reina’s popular print to your shelf. As with all of her Sole Fatale designs, Air Mag Girl is rockin’ an Air Mag-inspired outfit from head-to-toe from fresh, stylized headgear down through her jacket and tight, textured body suit.  Beyond the toy itself, the clever shoe-box style packaging is on point.  Opening the box via the swanky magnetic latch reveals the figure nestled in shaped foam which puts the standard plastic blisters to shame.

If you’re a Sole Fatale fan or just appreciate beautiful women and sharp kicks, come on out to the release on Saturday at 3Dretro starting at 6 PM. Reina will be there signing the toy. She’ll also have several different prints available as well ($40). If you can’t make the event, 3DRetro will release the Air Mag Girl online at 9 PM on Saturday evening from 3DRetro.com.

Superplastic Teases ‘Janky’ from Huck Gee

Paul Budnitz x Huck Gee’s secretive, yet oh so sexy Superplastic opened up just a bit more with the news that the first toy out of the chute is Janky! Seen in the new brand’s logo, Janky appears to be a cat or a tiger. From the shape of the head, here’s guessing it’s a platform concept – Dunn-y, Munn-y, Jank-y ?  At any rate, we’re excited about the re-pairing of two designer pioneers, Paul Budnitz—the founder of Kidrobot—and Huck Gee. Based on the counter on the site, Janky might just be dropping on 5.15. Oh, head on over to Superplastic for a chance to win one of 100 signed/numbed launch toys. The ‘new’ Kidrobot?  We’ll see!

QUICCS x Karmieh Design x Martian Toys – TEQ63 Ravager

A few days ago we posted teaser shots of the upcoming TEQ63 Ravager from QUICCS, Karmieh Design and Martian Toys.  At the time we mentioned the teasers only showed the upper half—turns out that’s for good reason.  The new figure is a bust style figure—didn’t see that coming :)  QUICCS worked with digital sculptor Oasim Karmieh to realize his vision of TEQ63’s all-synthetic nemesis, the Ravager. As seen in the rendered shots above and below, the devil is in the delicious details here including the menacing open robotic mouth and  the stylish puffy jacket that gathers and stretches just like a real one would.   If the vinyl production pieces can match the fidelity of Karmieh’s 3D model, Ravager will be quite the sight to behold.

The 7.3” vinyl figure will be available in both black and white editions. Each will included a s/n authenticity card and a set of stickers for the spray can.  Ravager will be available for pre-order beginning on Friday (3.2) at 7 AM PST through 3.15 at 7 AM PST  for $150 each or $275 for the set of two from six participating retail partners – Martian Toys (USA), Strange Cat Toys (USA), IamRetro  (USA), Devil Toys (HK), Hidden Fortress (Manila) and Collect & Display.  These are scheduled to release/ship in July.

Coarse – Cells Ignited (3.1)

unnamed (2)

Coarse continues its Ethos line with Cells Ignited. The third edition of this enigmatic figure is also the latest in the brand’s long-running GID collection. Limited to 234 pieces, Cells Ignited will be available for pre-order on Thursday (3.1) at 7:59 AM PST for $185 direct from the Coarse Shop.  While the mix of colors is different, the overall vibe of the cell side seems to follow the Narcosis edition’s more muted palette rather than the more saturated Paranoia.

Rocom – Death Jaguar Kickstarter

Rocom—illustrator involved in many toy projects and Yesterdays co-owner—is turning his talents to his first personal toy project.  Inspired by his love of Japanese Kaiju cinema, he’s created Death Jaguar, inspired by Jet Jaguar of Godzilla fame.  The figure stands 9” tall and is designed for playability with a dual-faced head for quick identity swaps, six points of articulation and two swappable weapon fist attachments!

Rocom recently launched a Kickstarter for the figure with plenty of dope rewards  including enamel pins (wonder who made those…), snapback caps, and of course Death Jaguar vinyls.  As a super quick overview, $60 will get you a set featuring one of three unpainted editions of the toy, 2 pins and a hat, while $80 bumps up the figure to the OG painted edition. Be sure to head over to the KS page for all the info and the full rewards breakdown.

QUICCS x Karmieh x Martian Toys – Ravager TEQ63 ‘Portal Breach’ (2.26)

Boom! After several rounds of sold-out TEQ63 exclusives, QUICCS and Martian Toys are pushing right on through with what appears to be a brand-new amped up evil robotic spray can bombin’ vision of the character.  From images/info floating, Ravager [TEQ63] will feature a highly-detailed sculpt from Karmieh Design,  So far the 3D teasers only reveal the (dope) head sculpt along with the spray can. Though, the sweet illustration (which seems to match the sculpt so far) from CrEon Chkn likely gives us a feel for the full design. From the design, we’re expecting this to be larger than the current TEQ63 vinyl.    QUICCS x Martian Toys are promoting 2.26 as ‘Portal Breach’  which we assume means more info, hopefully a full reveal.  Sit tight!

Zeen Chin x MINDstyle -- ReChild

MINDstyle showed a dizzying number of new figures at the Toy Tokyo booth for last week’s Toy Fair in NYC.  Perhaps the most eye-catching piece is ReChild by talented illustrator Zeen Chin.  Carrying the name of the artist’s first volume of collected works, the elaborate piece features several of his recurring imp-like children making like a centipede.  No word yet on a release date for this arresting new vinyl art toy.

Ron English – Punk Skunk On the Way

Ron English just posted a shot of his Punk Skunk prototype chilling as part of a to-be painted scene in his studio. The ‘dope’ figure is enjoying an herbal break with blunt in hand—note the weed silhouette cleverly worked into the tail design.  Ron’s new character was first seen in a painting (below) for his Toybox: America in the Visuals solo which opened at Corey Helford Gallery back in December. We’re looking forward to this new original art toy from Ron which is thankfully coming ‘soon’.

Tara McPherson x Kidrobot – Stellar Dream Scouts Minis + Larger Vinyl

Kidrobot showcased quite a few of their upcoming art toy projects this weekend at Toy Fair including two related Tara Mcpherson projects for which they showed off the packaging, but not the toys themselves.  Stellar Dream Scouts is an new blind-box mini series drawn from Tara’s magical universe filled with the cute, nonchalant and the mysterious.  Pink elephants, whales, rock ‘n roll pandas, mountains and free spirits will all be waiting for collectors.  Lots of great variety character/sculpt wise – by our quick count, it looks like at least 12 different sculpts.  In addition, KR also displayed the box art for a new ‘medium format’ 2-figure set from Tara featuring a girl and wolf companion.  [Photos: Kiba]
