Coarse – Ethos Volume One: Cells (8.4)

unnamed (5)

Coarse embarks on an enigmatic, surreal journey with the new Ethos series.  First up is Cells, a wild vinyl piece (10.5”) featuring a cut-away view of a void character revealing that which lies within.  The ‘cells’, seen as a surging jumble of characters, seem to represent fantastic potential, limitless horizons, and rainbow bridges.  Cells is one of a precious few ‘it’ toys, the reason that we all started collecting ‘art toys’, things that shouldn’t exist, couldn’t exist, but yet…do.

Looking at the Cells photos is a journey all on its own, a flash back to standardized exams and rotating 3D blocks.  This is the front, the side, that’s a unicorn, is that a fish?, oh…there’s cat. More than simply building desire for the figure, these promo shots make us yearn for a face-to-face experience, a chance to slowly consider it, rotate it, and attempt comprehension.  And, there’s more… the upcoming Ethos Volume 2 Strangers is darker with a tenuous link to reality.  Strangers makes Cells seem almost straightforward in comparison.

Cells will be available in two editions—the muted Narcosis and the vibrant, over saturated Paranoia—each limited to 299 pieces.  Coarse will release Cells on August 4th at 8:59 AM PDT from $185 from the Coarse Shop.
