Jason Freeny x Mighty Jaxx – XXRAY Foo Dogs (6.3)

For centuries, the Imperial Guardian Lions have stood watch over Chinese emperors, dignitaries, and the upper echelons of society.  Jason Freeny and Mighty Jaxx have given the XXRAY treatment to these mystical symbols, commonly referred to as ‘Foo Dogs’.  The XXRAY Foo Dogs (8”) set features the female guardian (yin) with a paw atop a cub on its back and the male (yang) with a paw on top of a ball (world).  The Foo Dog sculpts offer the traditional aesthetic and a modified XXRAY effect with the anatomical dissection reserved to the skull, leg and paw.  The patina style finish (green + bronze) evokes the ancient power within these proud beasts.

Limited to 100 sets, the XXRAY Foo Dogs will be available for pre-order on Saturday (6.3) from Mighty Jaxx for $250 + s/h per set.

Ron English – Richie Trump at SDCC

Ron English’s recent East Meets West tour was full of exciting news from the life-sized statues (and their subsequent removal) to the numerous new figures including the Black Light Cereal Killer minis. It was also where Ron revealed the upcoming new Richie Trump soft vinyl figure.  Ron’s latest political Popaganda cast a sarcastic take on President Trump’s less than self-made beginnings and features the artist’s signature ‘grin’. Look for this one at San Diego Comic-Con (7.20 – 7.23).

Kidrobot and Andy Warhol Foundation Add To Their Capsule Collection

unnamed (4)

Kidrobot has teamed up with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts to add even more to their Andy Warhol Capsule collection with two new pieces, The Invisible Sculpture and the Andy Warhol Polaroid Series.

The Invisible Sculpture is inspired by his performance in the New York Downtown Nightclub area, where he briefly stood on a  pedestal in the nightclub, which was done to show that the absence of a person or thing could be considered art. Kidrobot takes the concept up a notch be creating this diorama. The Invisible Sculpture is available HERE for $225.

Next up is a collaboration with Polaroid, which features a set of 11 reproductions of Andy’s Polaroid photos. Those include a number of his selfies and intimidate objects. Those can also be found available HERE.

Frank Kozik x Kidrobot Will Soon Be Selling ‘Free Hugs’

Free Hugs!  Frank Kozik has pulled back the curtain on his upcoming gnarly bear figure.  The sarcastically named new figure bears more than a passing resemblance to the previously released Poison Pup from TAG.  If you look beyond the creepy deco, the figure has a retro appeal and vibe that fit nicely with the faux-vintage packaging.

Frank showed off three different colorways of Free Hugs—Yellow + Green, Blue + White, and Black + Silver.  Three editions would be more than the norm for KR these days, but hopefully all three will be produced.  No word  yet on when this drops.

Awesome Toy – Mothman: Bat Beast of Kent via Medicom

Super prolific Awesome Toy is back with another sofubi beast.  Mothman aka Bat Beast of Kent is the second UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal) and follows the OG UMA, Bigfoot.   The 9” figure features a fun and friendly appearance.  Medicom is taking pre-orders through 6.30.17 for this first edition which features a mono color scheme with shading-like accents that makes it feel like a graphite drawing sprung to life. In fact, I stared at these pics for quite awhile before deciding they were (likely) actual toy shots versus illustrations.   If you’re not in Japan, it’s available on the  Project 1/6 shop  on Rakuten for $97.37 (+ s/h).

Huck Gee – Cheeky Monkey and Skullhead 4” Blanks (5.31)

unnamed (4)

Huck Gee is going big by shrinking his Blanks.  First up is the brand-new Cheeky Monkey Blank in a cubicle-friendly 4” form factor.  Cheeky? Yep—check his hands, he’s got a message for haters on both sides of the pond. It translates quickly and instantly from the middle finger in the USA to the two-fingered UK equivalent.  If one new 4” Blank is good, what’s better?  How about two? The shrink-it trend has also hit the classic Skullhead Blank which will be available in a new 4” edition.

Handmade in small batches in San Francisco, 100 pieces each of the new 4” resin Blanks will be available on Wednesday (5.31) at Noon PDT for a very affordable $30 each (+ s/h) from Huck’s web shop.

Kyle Kirwan x Urban Vinyl Daily – Willo Plush Kickstarter

unnamed (2)

Yes, the rumors are true.  Kyle Kirwan’s popular Willo character is about to make the jump from resin to soft, cuddly plush with a little help from friends, collectors, and fans.  Kyle has teamed up with Urban Vinyl Daily to make a plush Willo (12”) a reality.  After several rounds of intense prototyping, they’ve got the design locked in and now need to raise the funds to hit the ‘go’ button with the factory.  We had a chance to check out the proto in person at Five Points Festival.  It’s quite nice--good size, soft, and did we mention, adorable.  While it might not show up well in the pictures, the curly texture evokes the OG resin’s texture.

That’s where you come in, dear collector!  The Willo Plush Kickstarter is up and running with numerous rewards including a pre-order Willo Plush for a fairly modest $30.  Or if you want to live it up, you can get the plush, magnet and pin for $45.  For those looking to gone one or a few steps beyond you can add in an exclusive mini bloom ($100), exclusive 5” bloom ($140), or exclusive resin willo ($275).  You can check out all the rewards on the ks page.

Some Strange Things – Obskure Death is Punk

Barcelona artist Marcos Lorenzo of Some Strange Things has just released his new Obskure Death is Punk (25 pcs, 6.7”) figures —initially released at ToyCon UK in April—over on his webshop for 100 Euros (~ $112) + s/h. While previous Obskure releases have featured a female face/torso inset into the bust style platform, this edition stands apart from the others with a 3D printed skull and skeletonDeath seduces you with her backside and brings things to an end with her cold gaze. As with the other releases, the details are impressive from the various metal accents including the throat choker to the diabolic-anarkist logo on the rear of the jacket.

Codec Zombie -- Melting Cells (5.29)

Codec Zombie continues his exploration of the dangers of nuclear power with his upcoming Melting Cells resin sculpture (9”) which is scheduled to drop on Monday, May 29th at 7 AM PDT from the artist’s web shop .  Where his previous Feeding Plants focused on the larger environmental effects of nuclear reactors, Melting Cells ratchets up the message by confronting the personal horrors of radiation exposure.

Beautifully sculpted, Melting Cells features a two-headed victim of fallout.  The nearly all-white piece is punctuated by bright red  deformations on the hands and across the heads.  As with Feeding Plants, the new piece  evokes a sense of reflective grace in the face of tragedy. It’s a beautiful portrait of a terrible circumstance.

Melting Cells will ship in custom packaging which includes a thermoformed clear plastic top featuring a block pattern inspired by the distinctive graphite-block design of the Soviet RBMK reactors (Chernobyl and others).  Limited to 15 pieces, this will be the first and only edition of Melting Cells. As with Feeding Plants, there will be no additional colorways.  The single edition approach is commendable and rather unusual.  It celebrates the artist’s original intent and enhances collectability.

Jason Freeny x Mighty Jaxx – DC Golden Age XXRAY (5.27)

Mighty Jaxx, Jason Freeny and DC are going retro for the next XXRAY collection.  The DC Golden Age XXRAY figures feature the OG appearance/uniforms of The Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman and Green Lantern as seen in the original comics published during the Golden Age time period of comics (late 1930’s to early 50’s). While each of these look sharp, it’s fun to see the distinctly different original appearance of the Flash with hard-hat style helmet and the Green Lantern with a rather sorcerer-like vibe.

The DC Golden Age XXRAY toys drop this Saturday (5.27) for pre-order at 7 AM PDT from Mighty Jaxx.
