Seen: Frank Kozik – Hubris

Frank Kozik opened his Hubris solo Saturday evening at Billy Shire Fine arts gallery in Culver City.  The best description for his new body of work is ‘big’.  The five life-size Salari Ika’s set the tone. Each  hand-painted edition comes with surprise extras locked in the full-size briefcases.  Building on the giant toy theme, Frank also offered large hand-painted Zagorans, Belchors, RxH Mutants, two customized giant Labbit stools, and more.

The display of twenty-five Gold 36”  The Bird is the Word sculptures ($1000 each) on one wall is perhaps the strongest visual of the show.  Mao lives large in Hubris, including two one-off large Bird is the Word Sculptures – The East is Glittery and We Are Looking forward to the future.  The show also served as the debut of the new 16” Bronze ‘The Bird is the Word’ sculptures (ed. of 20, $4000).  The bronze is impressive – well-sculpted and solid.

Several large paintings round out the show with a focus on world leaders – Mao (several color variations), Che, and Reagan. There’s also a portrait of Belchor and a painting with perhaps the best title ever — ‘Obligatory Low Brow Painting’.

Hubris is Kozik at his best – his creative impulses freed from commercial concerns.  Big and bold. The show continues through November 7th.  Check the official show preview for artwork availability.
