Nathan Hamill launched Boris (U1 Toy Arts) , his first designer vinyl figure, at Meltdown on Friday night surrounded by custom versions of his racoon creation. The first character in the Picnic Land series, Boris stands 2.5” tall and was sculpted by David Kawano. Vinyl Pulse dropped by the launch event which was quite lively and pretty crowded. As a nice touch, two Boris related wall murals added ambience to the event.
As a way of celebrating his new toy as well as the tremendous artistic talent in Los Angeles, Nathan asked fifteen artists to customize Boris including Steven Daily, Lola, Amanda Visell, Joe Ledbetter and Michelle Valigura. The pieces are quite affordable with most available for $100.
While you might be tempted to write off Boris as yet another cute animal figure, he deserves a 2nd look – there’s some complexity to the figure especially evident in the facial expression. And if you’re wondering, yes…. Nathan is the son of Skywalker.
