Playboy x Kidrobot – A Bunny and Hef

DSC_1276-Edit-2

Kidrobot continues to showcase the very best in pop culture by infusing iconic brands with their designer toy expertise.  The latest crossover products celebrate the Playboy brand.  Released yesterday (10.9), the two products have very different vibes –The Paul Pope piece seems to be naturally targeted at Playboy fans and collectors while the PEECOL feels squarely aimed at the designer toy market.

Miss November 1978 by indie comic star Paul Pope, immortalizes Monique St. Pierre’s provocative yet mysterious cover pose. Paul was provided an archive of all the Playboy covers and chose Monique’s because of her “radical pose” and her “rad boots”.   His design is very faithful to the original photograph.  The main stylistic change here is that the figure has much fuller hair which frames her mask nicely.    The figure is a striking piece that would probably be at home in a handsome den on a bookshelf with other mainstream collectibles.  On the other hand, it would likely look slightly out-of-place in a display filled with say Dunnys.

It works on several levels – for those in the know it holds special meaning while otherwise it’s a sexy yet not over the top piece. The box features several stylized drawings of Miss November 1978 from Paul Pope and has a clever centerfold style data sheet graphic on the back.  The crouching vinyl figure measures 7.5” at the head and is available for $60 at Kidrobot retail stores, online at kidrobot.com, shopthebunny.com and select retailers.

Offering a very different vibe is the humorous Hef PEECOL by eBoyHugh Hefner, the flamboyant founder and owner of Playboy, is known the world over both for his publication and his famous red silk robe.    In contrast to Paul Pope’s piece, this new Peecol feels very much like a designer toy and would fit right into an existing collection. It comes with an eBoy fold out poster featuring a stylized Playboy compound.  It retails for $9.95 and can be purchased from Kidrobot, shopthebunny.com and select retailers.
