We featured Tragnark’s Golem figure from Kaching Brands back in September on Proto Monday. With the release of both the color (400 pieces) and the intimidating Black on Black (200 pieces) editions just around the corner, we’re taking a closer look at the up-until-now rarely seen Black edition.
Tragnark has created an extensive backstory for Golem which is included with each figure. Here’s our quick recap… The Golem is the ancient protector of the King of the Hlin people from
the Kingdom of Soledad. Devastated by the bloody 2nd Lotus Rebellion,
the Hlin culture was destroyed and with it any and all recorded traces
of the Hlin and the Golem. Two thousand years after this devastating
blow, a group of archaelogists excavating the remains of an ancient
city two miles below the water’s surface have unwittingly awakened the
enormous protector that is the long-forgotten Golem.
The Black on Black is a mix of matte black and glossy black. The contrast in surfaces is used to very nice effect on the horns which go from glossy at the tip down to matte towards the head. Touches of gloss on the toes, shield and of course the teeth add visual highlights. The mix of surfaces helps the intricate details to pop out — especially the designs on the back. Without the mix, seeing detail might be difficult.
The shoulder area and the feet are heavily textured — part of the sculpt. The slash marks coupled with the rough ‘hide’ convey the Golem’s backstory, that of a weathered and ancient protector.
In either version, Tragnark’s Golem is a great figure. It’s big at just over 10" tall and is quite wide as well. It feels solid and sturdy. Golem offers an inspired original design with alot of environmental details. The difference in vibe is quite striking — the color version almost has a sense of a gentle giant while the black on black is anything but gentle. The figure comes with a color insert which has the detail Story of Golem on one side and a map of Golem’s environment on the other. The Golem is distributed to retailers in cases of six figures — 4 color and 2 of the black. Suggested retail is $75. Look for it at your favorite store shortly.
