[Art Basel/Miami Beach is the annual ART event of the year in the USA. The 2007 installment went down a little over a week ago (December 4th – 7th, 2007) and Clay C., a serious art and toy collector, took in the art, had a blast, and sent back this report loaded to the brim with nice shots. For Art Basel/Miami Beach 2006,
the shock and awe was that, in addition to the AB/MB ‘main event’
(with 200 galleries hand-picked from around the world), there were also
another 13 ‘satellite’ art and design fairs (each with 30-140 galleries
showing) all being held at the same time. For 2007, the number
of satellite fairs was up to 23, making it not simply impossible to
see it all, but laughable. That considered, here are a few pieces
from some of the satellite shows this year (AB/MB prohibits photos,
other sites were mostly each gallery or artist’s call).
First, Geisai. Takashi
Murakami, the father of superflat, has put on his annual Geisai show
of young artists for six years in Tokyo, and some stars have come from
those shows. This year, through Kaikai Kiki, it was held as part
of Basel. 716 entries from 53 countries were narrowed to 20 artists.
Many of these young artists sold out everything in their booths at the
opening.
Carlos Enriquez, a Venezuelan
artist, makes pieces inspired by his Japanese kaiju collection – He
is currently finishing up a 20-foot Darkron.

Design Miami
Tojukin Yoshioka, Designer
of the Year 2007, did this amazing installation in the top floor of
the Moore building.
Moss – NYC design gallery. In the last few pictures, they were pressing stacks
of photos into blocks with glue, then turning the blocks into paper
vessels on a lathe, revealing inside the faint image of the original
photo.
