Seen: Vivisect Playset Round 3 (12.7.06)

Curated by Luke Chueh, Vivisect Playset Round 3 opened this past Thursday (12.08.06) @ Gallery 1988 and featured a menagerie of creatures from a selection of top postbrow artists including Mark Bodnar, Luke Chueh, Thomas Han, Joe Ledbetter, Chris Ryniak, Greg "Craola" Simkins, Amy Sol, Roland Tamayo and many more.  In addition to individual show pieces, Alex Pardee presented an installation of a large wall painting and 5 companion pieces  — striking work.

As mentioned previously here on Vinyl Pulse, Vivisect Playset is set to become a mini-figure series from STRANGEco slated for Spring ’07.  Early unpainted prototypes of each of the seven figures were on display at the show.  The full series roster is  Anthony Ausgang, Luke Chueh, Thomas Han, Peter Gronquist, Joe Ledbetter, Greg "Craola" Simkins, and Amanda Visell.  The sculpts are all quite detailed and feature ambitious details such as a removable mask on Luke Chueh’s bear, a flip-up front panel on Thomas Han’s design, and a removable baby on Peter Gronquist’s figure.

Thursday was also a special occassion – Joe Ledbetter’s birthday 🙂  Amy Duran, Joe’s manager, arranged to have Chef JT create a birthday cake for the after-show celebration.  JT pulled off an execellent rendition of Mr. Bunny in delicious frosting.
