Seen: Dez Einswell – Doodlebarn show + Toy Release

Dez Einswell’s Doodlebarn, which opened at Munky King Melrose this past Wednesday (12.13.06), featured the release of Dez’s two new vinyl figures — Memono and Whyno as well as several original paintings and many prints (on canvas, wood, and paper). Produced by STD Toys, Memono and Whyno  are limited to 400 pieces in their standard colorway and feature removable animal suits (bear for Memono, and rhino for Whyno).  With compelling design and very good quality, both of Dez’s figures are worth taking a close look at.  The removable (vinyl) animal suits are a clever touch and are fairly easy to remove and put back on (anchored at the ears).  As a special show exclusive, Dez also created 25 hand-customized Munky King exclusive Whynos with a black base, red splatter, and a red MK logo on the back.

Dez signed and doodled off and on throughout the night.  Between signing on boxes, figures, and sketching for folks he found time to sign ON the ladies as well — skirts and skin-tight shirts got the Dez touch.  Spread along Munky King’s walls, a large number of prints were available including a couple larger canvas prints featuring Dez’s characters superimposed on photographic backgrounds.  The back room featured roughly 8 or so original paintings featuring Memono and Whyno against colorful abstract backdrops.  This is the first we’ve seen Dez’s art and we’re looking forward to seeing more in the future.  On a parting note, Munky King has quietly become THE place for indie designer toy releases — props on another smooth event.  Be sure to click through to the full post for all the opening pics!
