Seen: Greg “Craola” Simkins – IM A MONSTA (11.7.06)

IM A MONSTA the first solo show by Greg "Craola" Simkins, opened this past Tuesday night (11.07.06) @ Gallery 1988 with a flurry.  Earlier in the day during the preview session, all but 2 pieces sold.  Craola was clearly amazed as he entered the gallery and panned the room to see red dot after magical red dot. The show featured 45+ pieces with a good mix of paintings and drawings.  Greg’s clearly been charging up his art mojo as the pieces were very stare worthy — the intricate details serve to suck people straight into his fantastic landscapes populated by all manners of monstas.

The show also featured posters of "The Beacon"  and a sweet shirt (grey/cyan and black/purple) available at the show.  From 8PM on Craola took his spot at the table to sign the posters, prints, and anything else the growing crowd brought with them from sketch books to Dunnys to copies of Juxtapoz. By 9:30 or so the crowd inside the gallery  was unbelievable, wall to wall people and it spilled out onto the sidewalk in front of the gallery and across to the adjacent stores.  I haven’t seen a crowd like that in quite a while.  Congratulations to Craola and props to Katie and Jensen for putting on another great show.  Click through to the full post to see more of the show pics.

  1. @__@ That is some amazing work! I’m still stunned by how each fo his elements flow into something that you wouldn’t even expect! Like the guy with multiple eyes being eaten by a fish that terminates into pieces of folding paper! INSANITY!!

  2. Greg is such an amazing artist. What a great first solo show. I hope he comes to the UK one day and does an exhibition.

  3. Great work by Greg “Craola” Simkins.
