“A Moment Ago, Everything was Beautiful” — pics from Gary Baseman’s first installation

Gary Baseman sent along these pictures of his first installation, A Moment Ago, Everything was Beautiful, which opened on September 15th and runs through October 28th at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.  The centerpiece of the installation features Baseman’s 7-foot tall Magi Spirits!  This clearly is one of those times when you just have to be there in person — I’ll have to check this out when I get back to LA 🙂   So, will we see Magi Spirit toys?  One can hope!

A Moment Ago, Everything Was Beautiful

Moments are fleeting. The artist Gary Baseman
creates his first museum installation by the creation of his magis, who
resembles ghosts, klansmans, spirits. These figures which can be found
in a number of his paintings is presented in three dimensions. These
magis move through Mr. Baseman’s surreal landscapes as reminders of
memories that live inside us. Manifestations of desire circle and
bubble around us.  Memories.  With the introduction of his new
sculptural work, Mr. Baseman continues to blur the line of fine art,
toy culture, and the character movement.
