Report: Ugly Doll Art Show

Kidrobot LA
hosted the Ugly Doll Art show this past Thursday to the delight of fans of everything "Ugly" who showed up in impressive numbers to take a look at the one-of-a-kind ugly dolls, drawings, and meet David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim.  Going to an event at Kidrobot always involves trying to gauge how popular it will be as a means of deciding how early one must line up.  I arrived about an hour before the show to discover a line of about 10-12 people.  When the doors opened the line had grown to maybe 25-30 people.  Part of the fun of these events is the "line time" where among other things people introduce themselves and swap their KR messageboard identities.   This time around, I met Raffy1 of the travelling Babo pics fame — great guy with a cool hobby!   In addition to KR regulars, some of the most loyal Uglies were there in force — children clutching their beloved plushes.  In many ways, this was the first family-oriented KR event I’ve been to –it  was pretty neat to see the pure enthusiam of these young fans. They had no  worries about flippers or anything, just love for all things "Ugly!".

The doors opened right around 7 PM as expected and David and Sun-Min were at the usual signing table to greet their fans. Sun-Min and David were very friendly and clearly enjoyed meeting their fans, signing toys,  and doing on the fly sketches as well. The show pieces consisted of large one-of-a-kind Uglys (24 inches or so), several regular size green one-of-a-kind uglys (one of each character), original framed drawings and smaller mounted canvases.  Things sold quickly — with the smaller Uglys selling out by about person 7 or 8!  At the end of the night apparently nearly everything had sold!

Once again the KR LA  store crew  put on a great show and things flowed  smoothly — the beer, great art, and all around good times.
