Muttpop x VP - Photo Comic Comp #2

The Muttpop x Vinyl Pulse Photo Comic Competition is back.  The idea is pretty simple, the challenge is creating something awesome.  We're asking you to create a 3-panel photo comic featuring your favorite Muttpop toys.  Wacky, wild, edgy, go for it.  The winner will receive fame and fortune -- well sort of!  As an example of what we're talking about, check out Jose "Kuzeh" Iturriaga's winning entry from the first contest.

The winning strip will be published in Issue #4 of the Lucha Libre comic and will receive a Dr. Destruction Classico figure.  The deadline to enter is Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 @ 8 PM PST. To enter upload your picture to the Muttpop Photo Comic Comp #2 gallery in the VP Community.   Please try to keep the individual elements (photos, text, etc) ready in case you're chosen as the winner -- it will streamline the process of adding your comic to the page layout of the comic book. Muttpop x VP - Photo Comic Comp #1 Winner

Back in November, we announced the first (of several) Muttpop x Vinyl Pulse Photo Comic Competitions.  The idea was simple, use your favorite Muttpop toys to make a three-panel photo comic.  The winner of the first competition is Jose "Kuzeh" Iturriaga.  Jose's comic "Dia De Muertos" was published in Lucha Libre #3 (shown above) and he received a Wild Edition Dr. Destruction figure.  Congratulations to Jose.

Lucha Libre #4 is right around the corner which means another Photo Comic Competition. Keep an eye out for announcement shortly -- in the meantime it's never to early to brainstorm on the perfect entry.  Also, Muttpop.com is all new -- with a swanky design loaded with the Muttpop blog, online store and more... Trexi Series 3 + Digits 003 and 004

Jim Koch's Zugan + Spooky Cat Digits Giveaway

It's Tuesday...  You know what that means...  This week we're giving away three prize packs  from Play Imaginative. Each one is loaded with Jim Koch's edition of Touma's Zugan and Danny Chan's Spooky Cat Digits 004.

Touma's Zugan first appeared in the original Mephist Festa lineup of four figures.  Jim Koch has transformed the big guy from a curious hulk into a pink lumbering mech or 'bot piloted by a very cheeful ll' guy.  Limited to 500 pieces Jim Koch's Zugan has an SRP of $45.00 and is available now at designer toy retailers.

HK artist Danny Chan brought his long-time Spooky Cat character to the world of Trexi for Trexi Digits 004.  For those confused about 'Digits' -- they are a series of stand-alone 3" Trexis from various artists. Keep any eye out for  Danny's original Spooky Porcupine figure  coming in '08 from PI.

DIY Grabbit + Ultraking Trexi Digits Giveaway

We're back...  Another week -- another sweet giveaway.  Play Imaginative has sent us so much goodness that we're doubling up here :-)  First up we have the White DIY version of Touma's very cool Grabbit.  He's ready for customizing but actually he'll look pretty sweet just as is too... Furi Furi's Backy and Bocky + Giveaway

Winson Ma - Diamond Previews Exclusive Adam Ape Giveaway

Dean Bradley - Mainframe Release (10.10.07) + Giveaway

Munky King will host the release and signing of Dean Bradley's Mainframe vinyl figure (flier) produced by STRANGEco, on Wednesday October 10th, 2007 from 7 to 11 PM. The evening will feature a retrospective look back at Mainframe with original art, prints, and more chronicling the evolution of Dean's character. Dean  also invited fellow Pocketful of Monsters Crew members Angry Woebots and Peekaboo Monster to do some live painting with him for the event. Music will be provided by R-Rated and DJ Colby.

For this release event, both the  Solid Orange and Duck Season Camo Mainframe editions will be available. Also the release party will feature the exclusive debut of the Hi-Gloss White Mainframe (ed. of 200).  The white will eventually be available elsewhere, but for now MK is the source.   Dean will of course sign figures for collectors.

Tim Tsui - Da Minci Da Joker Giveway

Da Minci is the latest figure from Tim Tsui, the undisputed master of Apes.  Released at this year's Taipei Toy Festival, Da Joker is a humorous send up of quite possibly the world's most recognized commercial icon.  I'm not sure i'd grab a quick burger if Da Joker was serving ;-)   Like all other Da Mincis, Da Joker stands 10" tall and comes in a cloth bag, one of Tim's signature touches.

Moody Contest Results

Seamour Sheep + Marty Mole Giveaway

The Seamour Sheep web comic chronicles the adventures of Seamour, a Scottish sheep, and the wisecracking Marty Mole.  Created by Dutch freelance illustrator Metin Seven, Seamour Sheep and Marty Mole were released earlier this month as vinyl figures from Crazy Label. 

Limited to 600 pieces, Seamour Sheep stands 6" tall,   comes with removable goggles (not pictured) and a protective bag and retails for $54.99.  As with many figures, Seamour Sheep is much more impressive in person than in photos due to its fairly large scale and nice use of the 3D medium.

MINDstyle's Buff Monster Art Toys Giveaway + Buff Fest

MINDstyle's Conehead by Germs + Giveaway

MINDstyle's upcoming Conehead is  a standout art toy by LA artist Germs.  Germs's self-labeled "Lowbrown" art combines Chicano culture and imagery with a Low Brow aesthetic.  Conehead mixes cultural references with a luchador mask decorated in a stars and stripes motif. Beyond the striking art, Conehead innovates in the area of painting technique. 

MINDstyle took the unusual and innovative step of hand-painting nearly the entire figure so as to best translate the nuances of Germs's work to  vinyl.  The results are stunning -- Conehead  simply does not look like a vinyl figure because of its subtle gradients and textures.  In fact,  assuming the production sample results translate to the production pieces, veteran collectors are likely to have the same "no.... really?!?" moment as I did.   Standard printing techniques used for vinyl (spray masks and pad printing) are best suited for application of flat colors.  These production techniques constrain how art is translated to a figure and also and perhaps more importantly they limit the types of art that can be reasonably represented in vinyl form.  Hand-painting relaxes these constraints and thus potentially makes vinyl figures a realistic possibility for a much wider selection of artists.  This approach has the potential to grow the art toy industry by broadening the artist base and collector base considerably.

MINDstyle's Stickmen by Brom + Giveaway

Brom  gives wondrous form to the dark, mysterious and just plain strange creatures that fill his seemingly limitless imagination.  Through his illustrations and paintings he has been involved in a dizzying number of creative mediums including his noted work for role playing games (TSR, White Wolf, FASA, WOTC), comics (DC, Chaos, Dark Horse), novels (Michael Moorcock, Terry Brooks, R.A.Salvatore, E.R. Burroughs),  video games (Doom2, Diablo2, Heretic),  and film (Tim Burton, Galaxy Quest, Ghosts of Mars, Scooby Doo, Van Helsing).  Chances are you've seen Brom's work and admired it even if his name isn't yet familiar to you.  He recently published his first illustrated novel, The Plucker.

Moody Design Contest

Ted Stilson's  8" Moody DIY vinyl figure combining  a dual demon/cow identity offers a new canvas for artistic expression. A large international group of talented artists have created  customs for an upcoming Moody custom show.  Got skillz?  Think you can go beyond what others have done?  How do you get noticed in the ever competitive designer toy arena ?
