Preview: Amanda Visell -- ‘Manta’ @ Milk Gallery (5.1)

Amanda Visell is on her way to Europe for the opening of her ‘Manta’ solo opening at Milk Gallery in Istanbul, Turkey.  The new work including several paintings and one-off wood sculptures, focuses on girls –- how others perceive them (and often underestimate them) as well as their true potential.  The new paintings incorporate wild animals rendered in a much more realistic way into her signature style with cartoony girls and carefree, pithy written sayings.

In other news, Amanda will also be at Pictoplasma (5.3) in Berlin.  She’ll also be showing protos of new collabo projects with Coarse at the Stroke Art Fair (4.30 – 5.5) in Munich and the Thailand Toy Expo (5.1 –5.3).

Tomenosuke x Aya Kakeda – Micro Bus

Talk about cute.  Aya Kakeda is working with Tomenosuke to bring make her fantastic Micro Bus a reality.  Evoking a charming Anime feel, the Micro Bus features a large female spirit/guardian with five curious passengers.  Beyond the strong design, part of the fun is arranging the passengers as you’d like – one per ‘bump’.  Sounds like this will be sofubi except for the wheels which will be done in harder plastic for practical reasons.  We’re looking forward to seeing painted/production versions of this toy.
