Circus Posterus and Tomenosuke first collaborated on Monsters and Misfits, a grand celebration of art in toy-form and otherwise, back in 2011.  Since then the annual show has seen top-flight artists visiting the Kusakabe Folk Museum in  he ancicent Japanese city of Hida Takayama, to exhibit their  stunning original artwork.  The third iteration of the show which opens on Friday September 13th features an expanded roster of Circus Posterous artists including Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Chris Ryniak, Amanda Louise Spayd, Andrew Bell, Doktor A, Ragnar, Carisa Swenson, and Stan Manoukian.

This year’s Monsters and Misfits looks to be the best yet with ingeniously imaginative and excellently executed one-of-a-kind art toy sculptural creations from all of the artists.  Seriously.  Putting together this preview post reminded me of the magic and wonder that seems to be increasingly harder to come by these days.   This show seems to unleash  the artistic imagination, free of the practical constraints of product, and the result is pieces that beg to be possessed.

In addition to the original creations,  Monsters and Misfits III will bring with it some exciting product including GID editions of the Tomenosuke + CP sofubi figures including Stingy Jack, Calliope Jackalope, Stinky Ginger and we believe, the brand new Heathen Snake Skelve.

Hit the jump for a look at just a few of the new original art sculptures that will be on display for the opening reception on Friday (9.13).  If you’re in Japan, definitely make plans to check out the exhibition and chat with Brandt Peters, Amanda Louise Spayd, Chris Ryniak, Doktor A and Andrew Bell who will be in attendance. If you aren’t able to make the show, Tomenosuke will open the online preview on Friday September 13th @ 7 PM PDT.
