Coarse – The Passage (7.6)

We’ve all come to expect the unexpected from Coarse.  However, with their newest limited-edition sculpture, ‘The Passage’, Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk  have obliterated the line between their elaborate exhibition sculptures and their art toys in terms of concept, ambition, and complexity.  This new, original sculpture continues the ‘Souls Gone Mad’ saga which began with last Fall’s exhibition of the same name at Rotofugi, and continued with the release of Chapter One: Fever and the Omens

Chapter 2: The Passage captures the voyage of the diabolical creature known as ‘The Void’, his Omen minion and Ruth, an innocent child he has misled.   Believing that The Void will take her home, Ruth boards the row boat, unaware of the perilous fate he has planned for her.  At 16” long and 11’” high, The Passage is the definition of a ‘showcase piece’.  The visual storytelling, sculptural detail and variety are remarkable, all the more so when one learns that The Passage is created not in resin but in fact, in vinyl.   At this point it’s clear that Coarse is challenged not so much by peers but rather by their personal pursuit of artistic perfection.   It’s been a pleasure to watch their progression with each new release and exhibition and to have the opportunity to own examples of their evolving practice.

Limited to 222 pieces, The Passage will be available for pre-order on July 6th 2013  at 8 AM PDT on coarsehkg.com for HK$ 3860 [~ $490], which includes global shipping.  The art toy sculpture will ship in the fourth quarter of 2013.   In the meantime, be sure to read ‘The Passage’ narrative on Coarselife.
