Bad Bad Buddha Custom Show at WonderCon

While attending Wondercon we got to check out the Beefy Co. booth, which showcased a ton of customs featuring the Bad Bad Buddha figure as a platform. The figure served great as a big chunky piece of vinyl to work on and we are in love with the turn out. For more pictures from the show, take a look after the jump!

For his first solo convention exhibition, he offered a wild collection of numerous large bold and colorful prints featuring barbarians, demons and more.  Fans of the Lurker had vinyl toys, mini prints, jewelry and more to choose from.  While the booth was focused on 2D art, Skinner created a small edition (3) of custom Fury sofubi for the show as well.  Hopefully he’ll continue to exhibit at various show around the country.

Reactor-88’s Custom Corner -- Artmymind

Welcome to the March edition of Reactor-88's Custom Corner. This month we're highlighting the dynamic duo of Julia and Guillaume Lachambre, aka Artmymind. They are full-time French artists currently working out of a secret lair in Poland, where they create custom vinyl toys and original resin figures, as well as some other crazy projects that will be revealed later this year. They have a strong love for Asian culture- it is an important source of inspiration and influence in their artwork. They also love Sashimi, so it's fitting that Japan was the birthplace of Artmymind and location of their first studio.

I first came across Julia and Guillaume's work last year and was immediately blown away by what I saw. While their creations are still toys at heart, they could easily be confused for museum-quality works of art. The level of detail and craftsmanship in their work is amazing- I can only imagine the amount of time and effort that goes into each creation. And the toy community has taken notice as well- you can purchase pieces from the their online store, though the majority of their work is currently sold out. They also have a very long commission list, but don't let that stop you from emailing them to discuss art, collaborations, or future projects. If you'd just like to keep up with them and their fantastic work, they can be found in the usual places as well- Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and their blog.

Inferior Trooper #1 by Plastic Foundry (3.29)

Plastic Foundry is about to release the first figure in their new Inferior Trooper line.  These hand-cast and hand painted 2.75” figures re-imagine the forces of the Galactic Empire by depicting less than stellar Imperial recruits forced to survive  with crude weapons and gear.  Figure #1 will be offered as a timed release pre-order starting on Friday (3.29) @ 7 PM PDT for $25 (+ s/h) and ending at some unspecified cut-off point. Dig the look of these – almost like they are from an era long past, distressed by weather and time.

PapaBehr – A Kick Butt Robotic Bear w/USB and Magnetic Powers

001-PapaBehr_1 copy

PapaBehr is an intricate kick butt scientist turned avenging robotic bear figure that just happens to double as a USB drive to add some practicality to the fun.  Designed by David Ngyuen and his uncle, Guy ‘Tuy’ Buckner, who happens to be a CAD expert and the owner of one sweet 3D printer.  Being true toy nerds, they decided that it wasn’t enough just to cool have a wicked looking robo bear with a removable head with an embedded USB drive. Nope – PapaBehr needed something more  … magnets. Magnets are the magic behind the toy’s snap on and off armor,  and sword (with removable sheath).  The team designed, 3d modeled the character, created a prototype using that crazy printer (SLA by the looks of the  resin reservoir), painted it

With the proto complete including packaging, David and his team are looking to let their creation loose into cubicles and homes everywhere.  In order to raise the money to produce PapaBehr, they’ve just launched a KickStarter campaign with the goal of raising $20k.  There are plenty of cool rewards including DIY editions ($30), painted editions ($35), prints, tees and more.  What’s intriguing  is that they have also posted stretch goals beyond the initial 20k. So many campaigns tend to raise way more money than the target goal, yet backers don’t benefit from that.  Now they do.   Any backer who donates at least $100 (heroic mode) will receive additional bonus rewards with each stretch goal met (35, 50, 65, 80, 100k,…).

Interested ? Go take a look and enjoy plenty of great making-of photos (3d modeling, printing, etc) and all the rewards available.

Penny Taylor’s Fossilised Morrows

Based on her work, Penny Taylor seems drawn to the cycle of life.  Her Monster Embryos consider the beginning while her new Fossilised Morrows (2” x 1.5”) are the remnants of long past creatures.  Penny hand casts and paints the faux fossils which feature actual moss for a hint of color and texture.  No two are quite alike. These remind me a bit of pet rocks with an added bit of whimsy and back story – each comes with a ‘poetic back story for these creatures in the form of tiny, professionally printed, concertina book’  These will debut at ToyCon UK  (4.6) but are  available for online order as are ‘custom’ fossils in which you specify shape, color ranges and such – each for £15 (~ $23). Penny’s also created Fossilised Rings which will debut at ToyCon Uk and will then be available from her online shop.

Preview: Ferg’s Squadt Assembly @ Rotofugi (4.5)

001-squadtassembly_frontpageimage 001-mainlogo

Ever since Ferg first showed teaser images for his upcoming ‘Squadt Assembly show @ Rotofugi (4.5), I’ve been thinking of this one-of-a-kind event as the ‘build your own SQUADT workshop’.  The launch of Rotofugi’s Squadt Assembly mini-site backs that up with a drool worthy preview of the crazy number of options that will be available to in-store collectors at the opening and through opening weekend.

If you’ve ever wished you could get just the ‘right’ Squadt, this is your chance.   The dizzying  yet amazing choices include five basic specimens (bodies) + 1 gallery exclusive, 5 lens sets, 5 tees, 4 buttoned shirts /sweaters, 4 jackets/hoodies, 2 vests, 3 caps, 2 bandanas, 1 backpack, 2 pouch sets, and an unbelievable 8 weapon sets. There are also a few gallery exclusive accessories.   Pricing is $95 for the basic specimen body and range from $5 - $25 for each accessory / add on.  I used the Assembly Preview to configure my dream SQUADT and it came to $170, but hey it’s exactly what I want (or pretty darn close). In addition, there will be plenty of Squadt Assembly apparel and lifestyle items for humans on offer, as well.

For those of us not near Chicago, don’t lose hope.  Roto will offer an online assembly beginning on April 8th featuring stock remaining after the opening weekend.  This will be handled lottery style – be sure to enter now.

At the risk of sounding like a complete fan boy, events like Squadt Assembly are what set the designer toy experience apart from nearly everything else – above and beyond, just because it’s totally cool.
