Dust’s ‘Lost Spirit’ Mural

While we usually focus on his toys, German artist David Stegmann (aka Dust) isalso  an accomplished painter and muralist. He  recently blessed Freiburg, Germany with a massive mural beneath an underpass.  Completed in just seven hours using a mix of spray paint and acrylics, ‘Lost Spirit’  (roughly 11.5 ft high by 188 ft long) features a wayward yet seemingly friendly, elongated fellow poised to greet unsuspecting motorists. Hit the jump for a few detail shots.   Also, if you haven’t been keeping up with Dust, he also recently released his new Teddys  R.B.S. IV  ‘open helmet’ polyurethane figures.

Huck Gee – Limited Edition Red Chardmonster

It’s been almost exactly a month since the first Gray Chardmonster stumbled his way out of his mystical stupor and onto discriminating collectors’ shelves.  Now comes the next cheerful spirit, the Red Chardmonster. While Gray was fond of imbibing, Red apparently takes it to a new level – witness his blotto expression and his one empty flask.  Once again limited to 10 ten pieces @ $750, the Red Chardmonster comes in laser-engraved box and is available by sending an email to sales[at]huckgee[dot]com.

“Today the trap was found empty. Nobody quaffed. Both bottles still full, not a drop has been lost. No sad soul will join me in my pursuit to get tossed. Another night all alone, lazily skipping square rocks. Perhaps just a sip, a quick hit of the blush. The red stuff it helps, it erases regret. It assists with the blur, makes me misstep and sweat. To make the boring more fun and easily… what? The bottle’s now empty? How could that happen? I swear it was right here, hasn’t left my sight for a second. Perhaps I’ll sit down, I’ll just take a moment, rest on my laurels til my eyes stop a twirling.”
– The Chardmonster.

Reactor-88’s Custom Corner : Emily Bee

Welcome to Reactor-88's Custom Corner. September is almost gone, so it's time to highlight one of my favorite toy customizers - Emily Bee. Emily works in the animation industry, which takes her all over the globe. She currently resides in Granada, Spain and is working on an animated feature produced by Antonio Banderas. Her past animation credits include "The Thing", "Sucker Punch", and "Alvin & the Chipmunks" to name a few. When she's not at her day job, Emily can be found banging elbows at the roller derby rink or drawing, painting, and sewing. I first became familiar with Emily via her plush work, and have watched her transition to focus more on custom toys. What really draws me to Emily's pieces are her bold color palettes, and the gothic feel of her designs. She also has a unique characteristic of incorporating lettering into a lot of her work which is a nice touch. If you'd like to keep up with Emily Bee, you can follow her on Twitter and check out more of her work on her blog and Flickr page.

Plastikmat – Yume Color Edition

001-essai yume color edition turnaround 2

French designer Mat (Plastikmat) balances his 9 to 5 toy design career with personal projects, primarily his Yume character – a young girl aspiring to be a geisha.   Now comes the impending release of the third edition of the Yume resin – the Yume Color Edition featuring a black + white design accented with blue dotted cheeks.  Following the original white edition (‘09) and Black (‘10), the upcoming color edition, slated for the end of October, will apparently be the last chance to collect this figure.  In addition, he’ll also soon release the final 9th piece of the OG white edition – a replacement for the  original #9 which was broken prior to the  2009 release.  While we’ve certainly seen geisha figures before, most notably from Tokyo Plastic,  Yume offers Mat’s vision – perhaps more reflective than previous interpretations.  Keep an eye on the Plastikmat online shop for both drops.
